The Boxing Day Tsunami hit the coastal areas of Sri Lanka causing thousands of deaths and leaving even more civilians displaced.

Over 100 members and their families gathered to raise funds at more than Melbourne interections for those affected by the tsunami. Although the project orgnisaed within just a few days, it was a tremendous success, becaming the association’s most participated fundraising event. The Victorian public was very generous in their donations.

Two fundraising projects were also successfully completed.  The Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle was donated a Colour Doppler Scanning Machine in 2006.  The scanning room at the hospital was refurbished with new furniture and equipment to accommodate the scanner.

A two-story building was constructed in the Martin Wickramasinghe School in Galle, Sri Lanka, as it was severely affected by the tsunami.

The building was opened on 6th July 2012 by the Honorable Minister Dullas Alahapperuma  with the presence of the Honorable Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkody and the Second Secretary of the Sri Lankan High Commission. The building was named the “Melbourne Hall”.
